Webster defines lighting as “the distribution of light and shade, as in a painting”. Great lighting design is the ability to artistically paint and enhance with illumination. Lighting has the capacity to affect our moods and feelings; To delight our visual senses. Lighting bring out the beauty of the design, parts that would be lost without it.
Lighting as an Art form
Through lighting we can influence the viewer’s perception and emotions by defining or accentuating the aesthetic elements, directing and focusing their attention.
Like the pallet of an artist, I have lamps that are used to provide color and illumination. The different lighting fixtures are the brushes I use to apply the light to the canvas. Wall washing, grazing, back lighting, uplighting, and spot lighting are some of the many brushes we have available to use. The proper tools and materials must be in the hands of the artist to achieve success. Art is inspiring to the eyes of the beholder. And like art, lighting varies in style and tastes. Lighting without the guiding hand, the skill & knowledge of application, is like finger painting.
Our desire is to open your eyes and emotions to the possibilities of what lighting can bring to your project.
